Due Date Shmue Date

My little man was due today, June 21st.

Ha!

My little man was born April 7th instead.

One of the (many) things I was upset about missing out on, was Kaden’s monthly pictures. I had taken pictures of my niece every month for her first year of life, in the same chair. I’m sure you’ve seen what I’m talking about on Pinterest.

My little peanut was in the NICU for the first 7 weeks of his life, so while I technically only missed one month, it was just another thing I was missing out on.

I didn’t get to take maternity pictures. I didn’t get to take birth pictures. I didn’t get to take newborn pictures. I didn’t get to take his first monthly pictures.

Many mommas are in the NICU up to, or passed their sweet babies’ due dates. I was lucky enough for my son to come home before his due date.

DSC_0101BWThe first time I went to college, I studied graphic design. It’s been several years since I changed majors and decided to become a sign language interpreter instead, but I still design sometimes for myself, friends, and family. When I realized that I would be home with my baby boy by his due date, I decided to make my own signs to take pictures with, including his actual age and adjusted age.

For those of you that are not preemie parents, a baby’s actual age is how old he is from the day he was born. The adjusted age is how old he is based on his due date, and when he was supposed to be born.

For example, Kaden was born on April 7th, so as of today (June 21st) his actual age is 75 days/10 weeks (almost 11 weeks) old. His adjusted age is 0 days, because today is his due date.

Most of the time, people have to use their baby’s adjusted age to track developmental milestones, height, and weight.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, “happy due date Little Man!” Momma loves you!
